throbbing mattress kitten has released "elderly tunes" which contains 10 years of chaos captured in a single collection.
elderly tunes is a five album compilation containing 62 songs and is available to download on cdbaby for a mere $9.99.
thanks for your support!
rodrigo y gabriela are truly a remarkable group. they have put out my two favorite albums in the last couple of years and are as talented as they come.
here they are performing a "tiny desk concert" for npr's all songs considered.
vic chesnutt, my favorite musician, gets to talk to terry gross on fresh air.
i played a set at the walla walla cigar box guitar fest 2 on saturday evening.
the event was held progressive style at morrison lane vineyards, walla walla village winery and sapolil cellars.
i had a really good time - it was nice to get out and play which is something i don't cajole myself into doing enough.
all the performers were great -- thanks guys...
which brings me to the next cigar box fest -- personally, i hope to hear a female voice in the mix next year!
here are some links about the show:

a pretty cool mashup:

wolfgang's vault is now making some of their huge collection of concerts available for download.
they are attempting to monetize their catalog so it costs a bit of dough but if you like live concerts, this is a great resource.

if you're going to be in walla walla on november 7th, this coming friday, drop by the morrison lane vineyard tasting room around 4:30.
i'll be playing an opening set for one of the headliners at the cigar box guitar festival.
tickets -- good for all three venues -- are $15 and available at sapolil cellars, walla walla village winery, and morrison lane vineyard.
the headliners will be gerry thompson from new jersey, rollie tussing from portland, and john mccolley, also of portland.
for a little more info, punch this link.
a live mashup...
their debut album was one of the finest things ever recorded.
it's been a long wait but they are releasing their new album, 11:11, on september 8th, 2009.
while they are going to have a hard time topping their debut album, i'm sure this next one is going to be solid.

Four guys who've been in a band together for 8 years....known at their day jobs as, Mr. Dickerson, Mr. Debeb, Mr. Foster and Mr. Dietz
one of my favorite bands, os mutantes (wiki) hail from brazil and are about to release their first studio album in 35 years.
since musicians generally get better with age (although they tend to transform into multi-verse copies of themselves), i’m pretty curious to hear what they’ve come up with.
If you haven’t heard os mutantes before, start with everything is possible which is a “best of” anthology and one of the better compilation discs that i own.
or check out the mp3s…

sorry--they pulled this one for some reason.
using looped youtube videos of people playing instruments
an article in time magazine, discussing the use of the auto-tune plug-in in modern music.
to be honest, this is part of the reason that the appeal of electronic music lost its luster with me, there just aren't enough rough edges -- too shiny and not enough dirt.
i suppose it won't be too long until there is a robot in your house custom generating music on demand, especially designed for you -- while a talented musician with a shattered self-esteem sleeps on a cardboard box in the alley outside your house.
no, really! if i was a professional musician, i'd probably be homeless and living in the alley outside your house.
the first commercially released throbbing mattress kitten album has just dropped off the printing press!
it is called "archaeology confession 192" and i personally guarantee that you will like it.
get it now from cdbaby.com!

recently, i commissioned a guitar from kurt schoen, who now has setup shop in walla walla, washington -- where i was lucky enough to meet him and have him build me the most awesome instrument that i own. a schoen turbo diddly six string.
a couple of weeks ago, i brought it up to portland so that recallseven could lay down some sounds with it. here's a little cell video (fasil debeb is playing):
to get an idea about some of the other cool shizzle that kurt schoen has created, check out his website.
for a little biographical information, check out this pdf that highlights his work with the broken levee guitar project.
the article was featured in autopilot, a magazine dedicated to writing about men and women who have made significant contributions to aviation.
below, shane speal performs "blue raga" on a turbo diddley 3 string.
my favorite songwriter, vic chesnutt, just recently recorded a session on all songs considered.
check it out
here's a new anatone song, "six foot plume - dickerson mix" -- it sure has been awhile.
check it out!
with the help of my friend nate lofland (natedidit.com), a logo for my one man band, throbbing mattress kitten has been created.
since my first commercial release, "archaeology confession 192", mastered by jeff stuart saltzman in portland is nearing imminent arrival, the time came to receive professional help.
let me know what you think.
a new album from david byrne and brian eno
paolo angeli modified a sardinian guitar and creates some interesting music with it.

from the univerity of guelph website, an "integrative biology" guitar:
start with chunks of wood salvaged from windfall trees. add a tiny fish fossil, pieces of stone, shells of turtles and mussels, bits of ivory and ancient cedar — even mink penis bones — and what have you got? it's a made-in-guelph guitar, one that its maker hopes will play music and tell tales. for the past year, prof. doug larson, integrative biology, has collected and crafted seemingly disconnected items into an acoustic guitar meant to evoke stories connected to u of g research and scholarship and to area history. glancing at pieces of the partly assembled guitar laid out on his basement workbench at home in guelph, he says: “this is an instrument to talk about history. it's not just a guitar but a great storytelling device.”

just got some snap jacks from a company called zzyzx.
the short of it is this: it is a instrument cable with a magnetic connector on each end, similar to the magnetic power cable on the new macs.
they have built in some sort of circuit that prevents popping when you hook up your guitar to an amp and since the jack is a separate piece, if you trip over the cord it breaks free without ripping the jack out of your guitar.
it benefits my studio since i switch between instruments frequently.
i can just leave one of the jacks in each amp and in my preamp and switch between instruments and amps with a single cable.
i hate flash sites but the company has one for you to check out, if you can bear the long load time: zzyzx snap jack
they have a slightly less annoying page on myspace with a video about the snap jack.
got a new dobro for the studio.
you can read about it.
awesome!
Friends and neighbors,
We wanted to let you know that on Thursday August 23 at 5 pm Recall Seven will play its first ever outdoor concert. We're currently spending every waking moment shopping for just the right sunglasses-something that says, "we care about blocking harmful UV rays," but that also makes us look like the kind of band whose cd you'd like to buy. If you have any suggestions, please email us asap.
Here are the show details: Where: Portland City Hall 1221 SW 4th (between Jefferson and Madison). Who: The Shaky Hands, Pierced Arrows, The Builders and Butchers, RecallSeven. When: Thursday, August 23, 2007. 5 pm. Sponsored by: MusicfestNW and the hard-working folks at City Hall. How much? FREE!
Learn more and see a poster @ www.commissionersam.com/musicfestnw
Also, we have a demo of one of our many new songs (Alaska193) available online at www.myspace.com/recallseven. We recorded it ourselves in a basement, which means it's pretty sweet sounding.
See you next week, Two guys who are currently living the good life in Canada, and two guys who are trying to figure out why it's cloudy in PDX in August. (Also known as jeremyfazkurtjeremy.)
this self-titled cd by "rodrigo y gabriela" gets my highest recommendation. if you do not have this cd, you are missing out. if you do, you're already turning it up to eleven.
it is perhaps, my favorite guitar-based instrumental album of all time.
the album contains a wonderful mix of flamenco with a rock sensibility.
pick it up and you will not be disappointed.
rodrigo y gabriela (with bonus dvd)
a site i've gotten a lot of good information from in the past has this tale of woe.
they have the site back up and running and it looks like they are using dotnetnuke for their portal software.
Hello friends,
We've got a show coming up this Friday. It'll likely be our last one until the fall, so we hope you can make it out. Here are the details:
Who: Recall Seven, Giant Mirrors, Deissaster Where: The White Eagle Saloon Link When: Friday, June 8, 9:30 pm
Last time we played at a McMenamins a certain band member destroyed his guitar with a solo so incredible that it rendered the instrument unplayable (well, it was either the solo or the fact that he smashed the guitar to the ground afterward.) Who knows what will happen at this McMenamins gig?
In other news, this summer we're gonna finally buckle down and start recording our new cd. We'll post demos of our progress (or blogs about our lack of progress) on our myspace page, www.myspace.com/recallseven.
Wishing you a fun and sunburn-free summer,
A guitar smasher and three guys who try to stay out of the way of the flying parts.
